Lots going on this week at W.O.A.S.H

~W.O.A.S.H. Rescues Animals in McKeesport~
Here at the White Oak Animal Safe Haven, we always have event filled days.  Recently, Ken Ferree, of Ferree Kennels, and one of our Volunteers, Frank Sabolcik, had to go rescue dogs from an abandoned house in McKeesport, PA.  For articles about this, check these out:

Besides being busy with new puppies, we were also thinking about some of our past pets and how much they mean to us.  We asked some of our loving paretns to send us pictures of our "Past Pets," so here they are.  Make sure you always send us updates on our babies, cause we also miss them!

In upcoming events, we are holding our 7th annual "Wags N' Wheels"  fundraiser on August 11th, 2012.  It is held at the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Department from 11am - 3pm. Call us at 412.672.8901 for more details.

Training your Newly Adopted Puppy or Dog

Here at the White Oak Animal Safe Haven, we are always trying to research new ways on training your new pet.  Before you adopt, you must realize that taking care of pet is a lot of work and that it requires a lot of time.  Training is really important to ensure that your dog behaves well in any situation.

There are a lot of easy ways to train your dog.  Since we are a No-Kill Shelter, most of our animals come from abused homes, or were strays before.  They have never had a stable home environment to be trained in.  Here are some safe trips on how to train:

·         Stay & Stop are very important commands to teach.  Make sure these are the first few lessons to learn.  If it is an older and more hyper dog.  You will need to take extra time on these to ensure that they understand you.

·         Be consistent. Make sure the signals and commands that you use are the same each time.  You should spend at least 15-20 minutes per day with your new dog.

  • When using voice commands, use a firm voice.  You want the dog to know that you are the one in charge.  Do not plead, ask or whisper, the dog will think you are too timid to speak up and he will think HE is the dominant one, not you. Also, don't scream, the dog will think you are angry.  Their past owners may have yelled, therefore they could become aggressive or frightened.
  • When your dog understands your voice commands, then you can add hand signals to the command in your training as well. That way if they cannot hear you but they can see you, you can always keep control of your dog.
  • Realize that your puppy will have accidents. Don't overreact *Do not allow your dog to bite you, even playfully. This sets a bad precedent and it will be difficult for you to break them of this habit.
  • If you dog should whine or bark when you don't want them to, use your hand over their muzzle and close their mouth. Then say a stern  "No" very close to their face, long and low so it sound almost like a growl.
  • If your dog is disobedient, another good way to reprimand them is to isolate them from the you, your family, or the rest of the animals (if you have more than one).  Put them in their crate or kennel and ignore them. Isolation from the pack is dog language for "you've been bad and we don't like it". Your dog will understand it. They may even whine and howl but you have to ignore it. Think of it as a "time out" for your dog.

Make sure you are consistent with everything that you do, and your dog should listen to what you do and say.  Remember that you are the dominant one, and not the other way around.

**Special Thanks **

THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT!

We had a really great week at the White Oak Animal SafeHaven!  This past Wednesday June 20th , we had our 2nd annual Beer Tasting event at the Rivertowne Pub on Route 30.  Over 100 people showed up for the event, helping us to raise over $2000 for our animals.  We got to taste 5 different beers on draft that night.  The beers we tasted were:

Flying Dog Brewery “In Heat” Wheat

Thirsty Dog “Old Leg Humper” Porter

Dog Fish Head 60 min IPA

The beer that won “Best Tasting Beer” for the evening was Woodchuck Draft Cider!  This is a great beer for the summer time & fall, and can even be enjoyed over ice!  We were happy to be able to taste so many different beers.

Other than tasting beers, we also had a lot of people donate money to help save our children.  The Rivertowne Pub was very grateful to us to help us raise money.  Thanks to everyone for coming out for a great event!  We can’t wait to see you next year!  If you want to see pictures, check them out here!

Don’t forget to come down and see our pets to take some home for adoption!

Pet of the Week
This week’s  blog is dedicated to our dog “Mo” who has been here the longest at White Oak Animal Safe Haven.  Mo is a Female Boxer/Pit Bull Mix and needs a loving home.  She is brindle in color and about 4 years old.  She has all of her shots, is micro-chipped, and spayed.  She needs a good home to someone that will love and care for her.  She needs a home that does not already have pets because she is not good with other animals, but she is very loving with humans.  Please help us to give her a good home in Pittsburgh! Call us at 412.672.8901 for details about how to adopt her.

Don’t forget about our Beer Tasting Event tomorrow night at the Rivertowne Pub on Route 30.  It is a $20 Donation for beer, pizza and pub pretzels!  Come and bring all of your friends to help our pets!

On another note, thanks to all that came and supported our Pets on Saturday at the Couples Golf Outing!  We had a lot of fun hitting the links and benefitting a good cause. Check out pics here.
